An ultimate throwback to the ’90s, A$AP Rocky and Guess founder, Paul Marciano, have teamed up to release a special collection for the classic clothing line. The 29-piece collection of ’90s inspired styles is both for men and women. A$SAP Rocky tells Vogue, “I just felt like there was a void of information, of knowledge, about how Guess played a big role in urban fashion and urban culture in general in the late ’80s and early ’90s. That’s just missing. I felt it was time to revamp that and just give it a little more juice and some new edge, and here we are.” The collection ranges from $34 to $228 and pre-launches January 30 at select retailers. You can shop the full collection at Guess.com on February 15.
In the men’s collection we find over-sized denim trucker jackets with large pocket detailing, tailored denim overalls, graphic tees, mock neck tees, and hoodies. The women’s collection features pieces like denim high-rise shorts, vintage overalls, vintage skinny jeans and even denim swimwear. A noticeable update is that the classic “GUESS Jeans USA” logo has been altered to read “GUE$$” throughout both women’s and menswear collections. Marciano says, “Growing up he [A$AP] wore and loved our jeans with the triangle logo on the back pocket and this line is tapping into his incredible artistic vision to create a modern heritage-driven line. It is a denim-heavy collection with quintessential ’90s influences seen in over-sized denim jackets, overalls and logo-centric styles.”
To coincide with the release, A$AP Rocky also also curated a time capsule installation at the New York Openhouse event space. Stepping in takes you straight back to a ’90s basement lounge, complete with comic books, Super Nintendo consoles, packs of Bubble Tape gum, and let’s not forget the faux-wood-paneled walls. On January 14, the collection was debuted at the installation. At the debut A$SAP Rocky said, “I actually looked into the archives just to see what was available and after that my main focus was silhouettes and reconfigurations, because I didn’t want it to fit exactly like those jeans back then, when they were so big and baggy.” He continued, “It’s just a big warehouse with cages full of clothes. Some of them are marked by years. I went in there and got busy. Fucked that whole shit up. To tell them that GUESS was actually lit back in the day.”
