The absorption spectrum of nitrobenzene in the 400-1200 nm region is characterized with a tunable diode laser. The method is found to be effective for characterizing nitrobenzene and is used to study nitrobenzene in aqueous solution, over a concentration range of 50-500 ppm. Based on the frequency-dependent absorption spectra of nitrobenzene in the 400-1200 nm region, the absorption spectral line shape can be deconvoluted. We report the reaction of CeO2 nanoparticles (NPs) with SiO2 NPs in aqueous solution. The hydrophobic CeO2 NPs are initially dispersed in water to prepare a colloidal suspension, which is then dispersed into a solution of the SiO2 NPs. We find that the CeO2 NPs completely disappear from the suspension upon addition of the SiO2 NPs at the high NP loadings that typically result in aggregation, indicating the formation of a mixed CeO2 /SiO2 NP surface. We further find that the reaction is kinetically limited and that the CeO2 NPs at the initial high loadings react much faster than those at the lower loadings. A monolayer coverage of CeO2 on SiO2 is thus likely formed initially, suggesting that the outermost surface Ce atoms at the high loadings react first. The reaction is concluded to proceed through ligand exchange between the Ce4+-substituted SiO2 NPs and Ce3+-terminated CeO2 NPs. The driving force for the reaction is likely the decrease in free energy of the Ce3+-SiO2 NP complex compared to the Ce4+-SiO2 NP complex.Genotoxicity of mobile phone radiation: a current perspective.
