While Hip-Hop videos are infamously known for depicting bottle-popping parties, extravagant cars and voluptuous women, it’s refreshing to see that rapper J. Cole took an alternative route with the new video for his track, “Crooked Smile” from his chart-topping album, Born Sinner.
The track features TLC and is paired with visuals depicting a tragedy that happens too often in the inner-city. Directed by Sheldon Candis, the video takes a jab at the “war on drugs” as it channels inspiration from the devastating death of 7-year-old Aiyana Stanley-Jones in Detroit, who was shot and killed by a police officer when cops raided her home in search of a murder suspect back in 2010.
The powerful video has sparked the attention of many and with the Trayvon Martin ruling still being fresh on many minds, it elludes to the grim reality that too many of our youth have be taken too soon–and all by violence. Check it out and tell us what you think!
