The 2017 Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is ruby in color with a magenta rim. It has an enticing nose of cassis, blackberry, vanilla, sage, and spearmint. Upon entry, this wine builds from potpourri and bramble to a bright pop of raspberry on the mid-palate. A juicy finish with chewy tannins and a medium length.

The Napa Cabernet Sauvignon is more limited in availability than the Alexander Valley. Production is the largest yet for the Silver Oak 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa (a blend of mostly Cabernet Sauvignon with small amounts of Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec blended in). Full-bodied, chewy, and muscular with an inky dark ruby/plum color, and hints of wood smoke, tobacco, cinnamon, espresso roast, and herbs, this dense, chewy, lavishly oaked wine should drink well for 10-12 years.
Tasting Notes: "The Meyer Family Fluffy Billows is a good old American Cabernet that is polished and elegant. The aromas spring to life with ripe plum and blackberries jumping out of the glass. Sourced from the same vineyard as the Spitfire, but without American Oak. Two years in oak have softened the palate, making this a very approachable Oakville red wine. As with previous vintages we get hints of cardamom and other savory characters.
Unlike previous vintages, this wine does not seem to need extra bottle aging to settle down. The 2019 seems surprisingly drinkable for such a young cabernet, making it extremely enjoyable at the moment and an appropriate accompaniment to your next steak.100% Cabernet Sauvignon. 13.7% ABV.

Twomey's small-production Pinot Noir from the folks at Silver Oak is now available in limited quantities. From two outstanding Anderson Valley vineyards, the estate-owned Monument Tree Vineyard and the Ferrington Vineyard, here's a lovely expression of Anderson Valley Pinot Noir from the makers of Silver Oak. Aged 13 months in barrel, with 11 months of those spent on primary lees in 100% French Oak (31% new). This wine was made with 24% whole cluster.
The Twomey Anderson Valley Pinot Noir was sourced from the sustainably farmed Ferrington Vineyard in Boonville and the organically farmed Savoy Vineyard in Philo and Monument Tree Vineyard in Navarro. We began making wine from Monument Tree in 2007 and have been so impressed with the quality of the fruit that we purchased the vineyard in 2010, recognizing that it had become the crown jewel of our Anderson Valley bottling.

The origin and story of Silver Oak Cellars began with a handshake and meeting between two friends having a bold dream and vision. The two, Ray Twomey Duncan and Justin Meyer, wished to focus on a single grape variety, Cabernet Sauvignon. Ray was an entrepreneur from Colorado who invested in several Californian vineyards during the late 1960s. On the other hand, Justin was a winemaker trained at the Christian Brothers. The two worked together to establish the winery in 1972 in Napa Valley.
Since its set up, Silver Oak Cellars gradually grew in fame and popularity. The vineyards owned by the winery remain located in Alexander Valley and Napa Valley. The plots stretch over 400 acres. They get farmed using leading-edge technologies and approaches. The quality of both the lands allowed Silver Oak Cellars to develop and produce the highest-quality wines. It permitted the Cabernets they manufactured to be of world-class standards, precisely what the winery aimed to do.
Silver Oak began over a handshake between two friends with a bold vision: focus on one varietal, Cabernet Sauvignon, aged exclusively in American oak and worthy of cellaring for decades to come. Ray Twomey Duncan, a Colorado entrepreneur who began investing in California vineyards in the late 1960s, and Justin Meyer, a Christian Brothers-trained winemaker, co-founded Silver Oak out of a Napa Valley dairy barn in 1972, producing only 1,000 cases of their inaugural vintage.
Since 2014, Napa Valley native Nate Weis has overseen all grape growing and wine making operations at Silver Oak. Nate worked side-by-side with his predecessor Daniel Baron, just as Daniel worked with Justin Meyer before his retirement. These overlapping tenures ensure consistency and quality control, as well as the inherent wisdom that our best wines are still ahead of us.
The 2016 vintage was the beginning of the end of the enduring drought. Ample rainfall in the winter months filled reservoirs and soil profiles and allowed a strong start into the growing season. Warm weather in mid-February led to early bud break, but were fortunate not to see any frost damage to the vulnerable shoots in spring. The post-bloom period was consistently warm and steady throughout, and there were only two smaller heat events. A few cool weeks in August followed and brought plenty of coastal fog to protect the developing fruit. The result was healthy fruit with high flavor and aromatic concentration plus good acidity--the perfect combination for a one-of-a-kind wine.

$2-4 more in cost per bottle Oak barrels are expensive because only 2 barrels can be made from an 80 year old oak tree. French barrels are in demand so they cost about twice as much as American barrels. Find out more about oaking wine
FRANCE: A great example of an expensive wine made with French oak is Cros Parantoux by Henri Jayer (On-ree Shza-yay). This $5,200 bottle of wine from Burgundy was produced using 100% new oak. Henri Jayer was an instrumental figure in turning around the quality in Burgundy wine. He died in 2006 and today his nephew, Emmanuel Rouget, makes Cros Parantoux.
USA: A great example of a much less expensive wine (but still quite fancy) that uses American oak barrels is called Silver Oak . This wine is one of the few wines championing the use of the much more locally sustainable American oak grown in Missouri.
O'Connell sourced the barrels and shipped them to Vermont, where Mad River Distillers filled the previous red wine-filled casks with aged Revolution Rye, a unique style whiskey with a rare 100 percent rye mashbill. With only five barrels aged in the Mad River Distillers rickhouse, the new limited release showcases the strengths of both the wine and the whiskey.
The sale provides Michael David, a family-owned winery which has gained a large following with The 7 Deadly Zins and Freakshow brands, its first property in the premium North Coast region, where it already sources some of its grapes.
'I have what I call a reverse commute. We buy a bunch of North Coast grapes to make Lodi wines,' said Kevin Phillips, vice president of operations at Michael David. 'For us, it's a pure facility play.'
Michael David will not immediately open up a tasting room at the site because it first wants to build up its Sonoma County wine portfolio, Phillips said. The majority of its wines sell for between $15 to $19 a bottle.
Silver Oak did not have a need for the Geyserville winery as it finishes completion of its new facility near the Jimtown Store in Healdsburg, said David Duncan, the winery's president and chief executive officer. It also owns the Twomey facility on Westside Road in Healdsburg, the former Roshambo facility. That brand offers pinot noir, merlot and sauvignon blanc wines. 041b061a72
