Howard Hawks's talents as a director and storyteller are evident in every frame of the film. He and his crew of actors, screenwriter Ben Hecht (who adapted the American version of Noël Coward's play in 1947), and cinematographer Charles Rosher turned the script into one of the most popular and well-regarded comedies in history. Humphrey Bogart gives a wonderfully human performance in his first film for Hawks. The other members of the cast are outstanding: Spencer Tracy as the hardboiled attorney who is also the couple's houseguest, Katharine Hepburn as the trophy wife who is honest to a fault and Ginger Rogers as the woman who actually teaches Hepburn how to be a wife. The supporting cast includes the glittery team of George Sanders and Alice Faye, who shows wit and refinement, and feature role players like Walter Brennan, Gene Raymond, Alan Mowbray, Jane Wyatt and Frank McHugh. Director Alfred Hitchcock's most racy movie of this era is definitely "the" best of his movies. However, for one thing it's a movie that began to go out of favor with the critics after a while. But you never knew this guy was a master back in the 1940s. I mean, just check out "The Lady Vanishes" from 1936 which is considered by many to be the first true Hitchcock film. Some may argue that it has its problems but who cares, it's so stunningly well-done that it will probably age gracefully and last as long as the sun.
Filmmaker Anita Lustig's playful documentary, About Framing, shows how framing of pictures can get out of control. Using two contrasting techniques - jerky handheld shots and more controlled sequences - the film explores how framing affects perception, memory and our sense of time and space. The movie is a playful meditation on film's ability to distort, as well as the concept that one picture frame in a series can impose a different visual order. The major players here are the filmmaker, Loreen Aronson, whose first film was shot with her parents as subjects, and David Thacker, whose first two films were recorded with 35-millimetre cameras and spooled onto 16mm film stock. 3d9ccd7d82
